DJ Vish - available Europe-wide

Vish got into Salsa when he moved to Cambridge. He was new to the city and a colleague recommended Salsa with Nelson Batista, known as the Godfather of Salsa. It did not take him long to start organising his own Salsa events and DJ'ing too, though that did take away from his dancing time! From DJ'ing in house parties, his repertoire gave him the opportunity to DJ in most nightclubs in Cambridge, the London Scala and others around Europe. He is the resident DJ at The Fez Club Fiesta Night entertaining about 600 each Wednesday, and he also DJ'd for the  Summer Junction Schools, entertaining about 1000 international students.

He runs several Salsa nights a week, and a monthly Saturday Tequila night in Cambridge. Of DJ'ing he says "When I DJ I feel I am telling a story and giving a performance. Keeping the dance floor busy with smiley faces is the biggest satisfaction. Each mix and piece of music tells a story. Shakespeare was so right 'If music be the food of love, play on'".

As a promoter, successful nights that bring all sorts of people together, bringing a smile to their faces, and contributing to the community is what keeps him going. And during the classes, ensuring each student gets to learn the skills and above all, have fun.

Abbe Edwards

Abbe first encountered Salsa whilst at University in Glasgow and was mesmerized by this intricate, sensual dance. But it wasn't until moving to Cambridge in 2006 that she started to take regular classes, learning primarily with Nelson Batista, the Godfather of UK Salsa. Building on a background in ballet and modern dance, Abbe made rapid progress and soon moved on to train with Joseph Davids and the Latin Collective team.

Abbe is a regular teacher with Latin Collective in Cambridge and helps organize and teach at events and weekenders, as well as running their weekly Salsa nights in Bishop’s Stortford. As well as teaching Abbe performs with one of Latin Collective's performance groups, Coleccion Diverso.

Abbe enjoys developing her skills and understanding of the dance and passing this on to her students. She uses knowledge gained from a wide range of tutoring both in the UK and abroad, including a trip to Cuba where she gained an appreciation for the roots of Salsa, as well as concepts gained from studying Yoga and Shotokan Karate to help her students to progress. Abbe takes great pleasure in seeing her students improve and passing on the passion she feels for Salsa and all forms of Latin dance.

Danie Street

Danie began teaching in October 2006 under the expert instruction of Joseph Davids. Since then she has become a prominent member of the team teaching at many venues across London and the Home Counties and at events such as Latin Collective All-Dayers, Dance Asylum – Belfast and The London Latinfest.

Danie trained as a professional dancer and has previous teaching experience in aerobics, ballet and jazz. She has developed a confident teaching style and focuses on explaining details and providing students with individual feedback.

She has worked with top names including Irene Miguel, Laith Sami and Andrea Stewart, performing at Scala, Bar Salsa and the UK Congress. Danie is a passionate, dynamic performer, and a skilled, patient teacher. She recently took a break from teaching to undertake a six month contract as a dancer on a cruise ship, and now returns to the UK to continue her work with the Latin Collective.

She is looking forward to developing her teaching skills and experience further, and to seeing what new challenges the future holds. Watch this space…

Joe Davids

Joe did not dance Salsa at all until 1995 when his friends took him out to the re-opening of Salsa Palladium at which he was dared to ask 25 different women to dance. He had great fun that night but his lack of skill (he was only able to do the basic steps that Roberto had taught him) made him determined to learn Salsa. But he would have to wait until the end of 1997 before he could do this, when his best friend Waldemar (a Polish dancer) took him out to a Salsa Rapido night at Smithfields in London.

He soon made progress and developed his skills as a leader and learned the different basic techniques of what is now known as Miami/Puerto Rican style Salsa. In 2000 he developed one of his most successful projects and the UK’s biggest clubnight – the SCALA BANK HOLIDAY ALL-NIGHTERS. Whenever possible Joe travels out to New York to study with Eddie Torres or (better still brings him out here to work with us).

In the last few years, Joe has worked hard with his team to develop both his and their skills as dancers and teachers and the result has been some of the UK’s best dancers and most popular teachers. As well as festivals in the UK including Pontins, The Salsa Explosion Festival and numerous other weekenders Joe and his team have travelled abroad extensively for work and have taught already in Italy, Spain, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Eire and Denmark, and they are booked to visit India, Greece, Australia and Seattle & NY.

Ka Fai Leung

Ka Fai got his first taste of Salsa whilst studying at Imperial College London when he was introduced to it on nights out by some of his Colombian friends. In 2006, he moved to Cambridge where he began taking lessons in New York Style Salsa with Joe Davids and the Latin Collective Team, and his fondness for dancing has grown ever since. Although he had no background in dancing, his sense of rhythm, timing and coordination developed as a drummer allowed him to progress very quickly as a dancer. Not only this, he found that his martial arts background in Wing Chun Kung Fu shared similar concepts with Salsa dancing, such as the way energy flows, and the science and angles of the body which has greatly helped in his understanding and developing artistry. His repertoire has grown to encompass other styles including New York Style Salsa on1 and on2, Cha Cha and Bachata.

He is a regular teacher with the Latin Collective in Cambridge, and has also taught at the team’s Lakeside and London venues, and more recently in Norwich and Bishop’s Stortford. He has also helped organise and teach at highly successful Salsa events including the annual Cambridge Halloween Weekender and the London Latinfest. As well as teaching, Ka Fai also performs in one of the team’s performance group Colección Diverso and is the lead choreographer.

He is never short on passion and personality and his positive attitude towards the improvement of his students, together with his friendly personality, patience and dedication, has earned him the respect of his students and peers.
